Slide 1
Hello, my name is Mikal Jonas and this is my Pecha Kucha about my project for unit 8 about the things I have done so far and wish to do. For this Unit, we have to make a game or animation based off the theme that we were given and I chose to make a game as I enjoy the process of creating my own world.

The theme Is London Then And Now. Where we have to create a game or animation that illustrates how London was in the past and how it developed. We can choose to focus on any topic we want

My response to being told about the theme was to complete a skills audit where I reviewed the skills I developed through this course. I also vested my old high school to get ideas from my old graphics teacher to see if she had any ideas as I once did a London project with her.

My initial idea was to make a game about a schoolboy set in future London. He will use a Virtual Reality Simulator to look at London in the past and learn different things like fashion and politics.

We went on a trip to the Museum Of London were I looked at different exhibits such as ones about early humans, weapons and clothing.

We also went on a trip around different places around London. We took pictures of central London and also the more rundown side like Brick Lane.

The Museum trip gave me the idea to make the narrative of my game that time got messed up so many different people from different eras. I got this idea as I saw many interesting eras that I wanted to explore and this narrative would allow that.

On the London trip, I saw many homeless men and here, I saw a homeless man washing his clothes using this fountain.

This gave me the idea to focus on my narrative on the topic of class. Of how in the pass we went from hue distinctions between them to how we have become more equal with a middle class.

I also did some contextual analysis on games based off London. With the games Grand Tourismo and The Getaway, they use very accurate directions of real London Locations. This has inspired me to make realistic locations for my game.

The game ZombiU shows a depiction of the more rundown side of London like Brick Lane. I found this interesting as this isn’t shown much in media and this also helped inspired my idea about a game about the different classes.

I did some concept art on character shapes using an Instagram post I used to help construct the body and I even tried out designs for the clothing. I decided that for the background art I may use a sketchy art style like I did for units 5, 6 and 7, but I will do more exploring.

My chosen idea is the one about class as I believe it’s the most interesting one and I like how I came up with the ideas for watching an event happen rather than It just coming to my brain.

My target audience will be for any open-minded person and the age rating that the game will lead to is a PG. as using the BBFC’s guidelines put my narrative in this category as it won’t be violent and is educational.

The skills that I will need to use for this project are, Organising work well, planning out future actions, time management, communication and the use of different programs

The programs that I will be using are Photoshop for digital drawing and illustrations, Animate for creating animations cycles and videos, Audition for editing any of my audio work, premiere to edit any animated videos if I make some and Construct 2 for constructing the game.

The skills I hope to develop through this project are, not overcomplicating things, enhance my coding skills, self-confidence in my own work, hitting my desired targets and my drawing ability. These will naturally develop through experience and practice.

I will be doing different experiments to help find a unique style for my outcome. I will experiment with laser cutting characters and locations, using different Photoshop brushes I’ve never used before, use different drawing styles and try out different types of codes.

My aim is to get people to think about things that they don’t normally think about. Like all of the disparate ways that poor people have to do to get by, and to show how the difference between the classes has changed and how it hasn’t.

For documenting, I will be using Blogger which will be sorted into different sections such as a section for Research and Contextual Analysis. I will keep updating it, especially providing screenshots to evidence any of them. With documenting changes to my idea, I will type out any new idea I get on the day I make them so all of them will be sorted out into different dates so it will be clear on how they developed. And when I make a final idea, I will state that it is such.

Pecha Kucha Responses

After the Pecha Kucha, the people we were presenting it to each gave their own feedback, most of which I will develop on.  The main key points were;

I agree that I didn’t make it clear what the characters do in my chosen idea. But I will have the characters acting upon their Job roles in the past to see the difference between the higher and lower class
